Celebrating the 10th International Day of the Girl: Plan India's Young Girl Changemakers Takeover Influential Leadership Positions for Advancing Girls' Rights and Gender Equality Tuesday 11 October 2022 06:47 AM UTC+00 Business Wire India Committed to strengthening the girls' rights and gender equality space over the past decade, Plan India's Girl Changemakers stepped into the leadership roles across Diplomatic Missions, Corporates, and Government bodies on the International Day of the Girl. Through these symbolic takeovers, these highly driven gender champions will break gender stereotypes, encourage positive discourses, challenge discriminatory social norms, and mobilise people for a more gender equitable society. Girl Changemakers from ten Plan India's intervention states, including Rajasthan, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Delhi, showed strength and leadership and brought attention to the significance of girls having the right to decide on things that concern them. They showcased their potential as agents of change and engaged in meaningful and contributory dialogues to advance the cause of girls' rights and equality. Celebrating the 10th year of International Day of the Girl (IDG), Plan India released an anthem for girls on its social media channels. It aims to rally support and solidarity for an equal world where girls can aspire to become future leaders by highlighting #GirlsRiseHigh and mobilise key stakeholders' support to ensure equal access to education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities for them. Mohammed Asif, Executive Director, Plan India, said, "Plan India has been supporting and nurturing the social spaces in which girls take centerstage, are listened to and valued as equals. We believe it is important for all girls to be confident and capable of addressing and overcoming the gender norms, expectations, and stereotypes that have hold them back from achieving their full potential in their family and community. In India, millions of girls are now empowered and moving forward to achieve their aspirations and ambitions. However, there are still many who need our support and enablement. The International Day of Girl 2022 is yet another occasion for all of us to join hands with the girls, who are keen to take action and improve their own lives and pursue their dreams and ambitions." "Plan India is honored to have had the opportunity to support more than 1,00,000 girls and young women to make their own decisions on education, health, and livelihoods. We will continue to encourage girls to lead the process of challenging gender stereotypes and improving their status. When girls and young women hold prominent positions in their professions, they can amplify their voices and inspire others to do better in life." Girl Changemaker, Parul from New Delhi, commented on the Takeover initiative, "International Day of the Girl is dedicated to all girls who have strived for and achieved their dreams. The takeover initiative not only gives us a chance to be heard and understood, but also provides us with opportunities to grow. Taking part in such initiatives will empower girls to be independent, confident and self-sufficient." In 2011, Plan led the global effort to build a coalition of support behind IDG, securing backing from the Canadian government which took this request to the United Nations. Over the years, Plan has worked with girls and multi-sectoral partners alike to launch global actions on girls' rights. Thus, every year on IDG, girls from Plan India supported communities take over leadership roles in political, economic, corporate and social spaces, stepping into the shoes of influential leaders and experts, fulfilling their responsibilities, and demonstrating their power and potential to lead the way into the future. #GirlRiseHigh Girls Rise High is Plan India's national campaign for girls' and young women's voice, power, and leadership. Girls are held back by gender inequalities, multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, and systemic oppression that prevents them from being leaders in public life. Girls want to be part of the decisions that shape their lives. Girls know the challenges they face and the changes they need. Valuing girls and young women as actors is critical for transforming communities and shaping gender-equal societies. National and community decision makers must support girls and young women to Rise High by making commitments to open, safe, inclusive pathways for them and their networks to have equal access to education, health, and livelihood opportunities. ![]() |
This Diwali Think Outside the Mithai Box Tuesday 11 October 2022 10:00 AM UTC+00 Business Wire India For years, corporate gifting has been an effective way for companies to engage with their employees, prospects, partners and customers. A box of mithai during the festive season or a cap embroidered with the company's logo would be considered a great gift for employees and clients. Fast forward to 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic pushed employees and partners into the confines of their homes, engulfing them in a cloud of fear and uncertainty. It also showed the human race the impact of their actions – the damage they had done to the environment, and how retreating into our homes was actually healing our planet. Also, mental health awareness was (rightfully) on the rise, often causing a reset in priorities. Reaching out to colleagues and loved ones was now more important than ever. Real, in-person connections were replaced by Zoom calls and home deliveries – and that's when the quintessential mithai box just didn't cut it. Today, corporate gifting for employees is truly about bringing joy to people, engaging employees, and showcasing your brand's values. As a result, corporate gifting budgets in India are steadily increasing, standing at approximately Rs. 1,20,000 crores and growing rapidly at 200% per annum. Companies are rethinking their strategy when it comes to gifting – right from when to gift to the brand values that the gift would exude. In today's climate (for climate change), most companies want to come across as responsible, compassionate, forward-thinking and innovative. The best way to hit all those notes? A step-by-step guide to reduce the environmental footprint of corporate gifting! 1. Spread the message The first step to reduce the environmental footprint of corporate gifting sounds easy enough – make it part of your company's mission statement. Words like "environmentally conscious" can no longer just float around, they need to be anchored to your brand values as a goal. That's when it'll truly speak to your company's team, partners and prospects. 2. Walk the talk The second step requires your company to find the right gifting partner. A gifting partner that truly believes in reducing the environmental footprint of corporate gifting will go beyond using buzzwords like "sustainable" and "eco-friendly". After all, there is such a thing as greenwashing. The right gifting partner will consciously replace "sustainable" with quantifiable, well-defined labels such as zero-plastic and 100% plastic-free. Also, they'll 100% back it up – you'll find that there is absolutely zero plastic in every order, including samples, right from product manufacture to packaging to disposal. At Loopify, India's largest zero-plastic store for events, gifting and everyday essentials, customers will find a range of plastic alternatives. From the conventional wood and metal, to the kind-of-unconventional bamboo, coconut and cork, to the absolutely unconventional Desserto and Pinatex – Loopify's unique products make for thoughtful, out-of-the-box gifts. An airtight approval process for potential sellers also ensures that every product is 100% plastic-free, ethically produced and aesthetically appealing – making a Loopify gift hamper a cut above the rest. 3. Monitor & measure Did your choice of corporate gifts truly reduce the environmental footprint of corporate gifting? The third and final step will inform whether you've chosen the right gifting partner, and will set the tone for what can be done next year. At Loopify, intensive research, data collection and number crunching combine to deliver the proprietary Loopify Sustainability Index - a calculation of how much less plastic pollution and carbon emissions a Loopify product causes in comparison to plastic products. A measure of the environmental footprint of your corporate gifting purchase, this number can be compared year-on-year to build a more impactful gift hamper. This in turn would ensure that the environmental footprint of corporate gifting will consistently reduce. And with a range of over 6,500 products sourced from over 180 sellers, corporate gifts from Loopify would be different every time, with a different and definite impact on the environment. So the next time your team is heads-down in a brainstorm on Diwali gifts for employees options for employees, partners, clients and prospects, truly think outside the (mithai) box. After all, it's the only way to truly reduce the environmental footprint of corporate gifting. ![]() |

Dr Ananya Mukherjee Addresses Panel on Universities as Engines of Social Mobility at THE World Academic Summit 2022 Tuesday 11 October 2022 12:00 PM UTC+00 Business Wire India
Dr Ananya Mukherjee, Vice Chancellor of Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence today addressed an audience on universities as engines of social mobility at the Times Higher Education (THE) World Academic Summit 2022 in New York. On a panel on Leadership Reflections, she was joined by Melissa Nobles, Chancellor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Gary Young, Professor of Sociology, University of Manchester. The discussion was moderated by Phil Baty, Chief Knowledge Officer, THE. Summit was organized by Times Higher Education in partnership with New York University. This year's summit focused on the role of higher education leaders and policymakers in meeting the rising expectations for progress among institutions, students as well as the wider higher education ecosystem. More than 75 university presidents (or rectors or vice chancellors) are among over 400 policymakers, business executives and academics who convened at this world summit. One of the questions posed to Dr. Mukherjee asked if it was time to shift focus beyond a few universities with established reputations. Should policymakers and innovators be looking more at institutions who have a keen focus on tackling pre-existing prejudices or overcoming impediments? "It is indeed time to widen our focus beyond established universities and aim for an ecosystem of universities at different stages of development," said Dr. Mukherjee. "Each member of the ecosystem will have a strength to offer, irrespective of its size and resources, and this will be clearly recognized. All members would agree on a core set of values. One key element of this core value set would be the focus on dismantling systemic barriers, and not only skilling individuals to overcome the specific barriers they face. This will transform universities into institutions infinitely greater than the sum of individual outcomes. The comfort zone for universities is the latter – but it is no longer enough if they are to become engines of social mobility." "Let us work towards the creation of such ecosystems, hopefully with leadership from the Global South, built on true partnerships and recognition of the different kinds of strengths we can each bring to the table," she said in conclusion. ![]() |
