DP World recently hosted 5 children from Akshaya Patra Foundation, an NGO that is working towards eliminating classroom hunger in India, for a unique fan experience during Delhi Capitals match on 29th April. The children from the foundation were joined by His Excellency Dr. Abdulnasser Alshaali, Ambassador of the UAE to India and DP World representatives. During the match, DP World and His Excellency also presented a donation cheque to Akshaya Patra Foundation to support the world's largest (not-for-profit run) Mid-Day Meal Programme serving wholesome food every school day to over 2 million children.
 
Earlier this week, 14 children from Akshaya Patra Foundation were treated to a fun filled day, as part of a special meet and greet session organised by DP World. Delhi Capitals players Axar Patel, Mitchell Marsh, and Anrich Nortje had an engaging informal Q&A session with the children and played a game of garden cricket at the ITC Maurya grounds. Five of these girl children were invited to the VIP box at Arun Jaitley Stadium to witness the Delhi Capitals' match on 29th April 2023.

Most people will probably find it challenging to take up an electrician's course that involves the fundamentals of wiring, switches, electric metres, and lightbulbs. Rekha Mali, a local of Gudli village, Debari pursuing science stream on learning about the opportunity grabbed it with both her hands as she knew the additional skill meant lighting up her own future. No wonder, she jumped with joy when the first lightbulb she wired to a switch lit up every nook and corner of the room. Under Shiksha Sambal program, two batches of Pre-Vocational Training in Agriculture and Electrical were conducted for higher secondary students from Zawar, Dariba, and Debari. The mindset to do something out-of-the-box & learn something unconventional is a common trait amongst each of the 1st All Girls batch of electrical course conducted under Shiksha Sambal's pre-vocational program.

Shiksha Sambal, a flagship project of Hindustan Zinc was established to meet a variety of objectives as per the findings derived from early interactions with the students. Learning gap, lack of self-confidence due to limited exposure and lack of student-teacher bonding were the key setbacks observed. Shiksha Sambal program was created largely to alleviate such critical challenges by providing additional materials, remedial classes to build conceptual clarity, facilitate peer-group learning and identify potential learning opportunities outside the school. Furthermore, the teacher-fellow collaboration model was established which included organising a Reading Mela – an activity to encourage learning and personality development.

Currently, Shiksha Sambal program is reaching out to 8,000 rural & tribal students from across 57 villages in the five districts of Udaipur, Rajsamand, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara, and Ajmer. It offers school-level education in languages, science and mathematics through classroom, digital and hybrid mode. Additionally, to ensure individual attention to the academic need of each kid, a team of Field Personnel (FP) were found who eventually turned to be the fulcrum of the program. They play a significant role in increasing the teaching-learning time by providing model papers, ensuring learning material compliance, and focusing on library and lab practical sessions for the students. Shiksha Sambal program now functions with at least 1 FP per school who not only supports the students in case of absence of government teachers but also plays an active role in organising learning camps during summer & winter vacations and taking extra classes during holiday breaks.

The students of senior secondary level lacked the understanding about the opportunities available for the stream they had chosen. To bridge this gap, several career counselling sessions are conducted wherein industry experts interact with the students about various career & job opportunities, academic courses which can be pursued after schooling.

Since the inception of the program, the summer camps have evolved as an activity that focuses on bridging the learning gaps whereas the winter vacation camps focus on board examination preparation. Every year, more than 150 volunteers from reputed college institutions participate and share their learnings and contribute to the overall development of students from rural & tribal areas. Directed by Goutam Ghose, the 35-minute film captures the sense of uncertainty and discomfort brought on by the lockdown, through the perspective of a couple living in the heart of Kolkata – Kabir Basu (played by Suman Mukhopadhyay), a writer in his late 40s, and his wife Sumita (played by Gargee Roy Chowdhury), a teacher.

'Somoyer Smritimala' is a poignant film set during the initial phase of the pandemic'; '25th March 2020 – Nationwide Lockdown', says a frame early in the film. The film begins with Kabir and Sumita's quest for fresh air and sanity as they set out on a road trip to the countryside. Through the course of their journey, the film travels back and forth in time, capturing the challenges brought on by the pandemic. From virtual classrooms and eerie hospitals to mental health concerns and the woes of migrant workers, the short film throws light on the unprecedented consequences of the Covid-19 outbreak in a nuanced manner.

Together with Liberia First Lady, Merck Foundation has provided 37 scholarships to local doctors in Liberia in critical and underserved specialties so far, out of which 9 scholarships have been provided to doctors for Diabetes as a part of their Nationwide Diabetes Blue Points Program.
 
Moreover, 4 scholarships have been provided for the Oncology Fellowship and Master Program. This has given Liberia the first oncologists and will transform the landscape of cancer care in the country by forming the first cancer care team.
 
Merck Foundation has also provided 13 scholarships for One-Year Online PG Diploma and Two-Year MSc in Sexual and Reproductive Medicine, and 8 scholarships for Embryology training, Fertility training and Master in the Biotechnology of Human Assisted Reproduction and Embryology, and 3 scholarships have been provided for One-Year Online Post Graduate Diploma and Two-year MSc in Acute Medicine.
 
"Merck Foundation has always believed in the importance of building healthcare capacity and has been working towards this since 2012. We will continue to provide medical training to Liberian doctors in various medical specialties in partnership with the First Lady of Liberia," assured Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej.
 
Merck Foundation in partnership with The Liberia First Lady has also initiated "Educating Linda" Program, which is very important for Liberian girls as through this program, scholarships will be provided to 20 underprivileged but brilliant girls to continue their education till they graduate. Additionally, Merck Foundation distributed 3000 essential school items sets to school-going girls.
 
Moreover, Merck Foundation together with The First Lady of Liberia and The Ministry of Education launched three children's storybooks titled: "Marpeh's Story" to emphasize on the strong family values of love and respect from a young age which will reflect on eliminating the stigma of infertility and resulted domestic violence in the future, "Educating Miatta Story" to emphasize on the importance of empowering girls through education and "Make the Right Choice Story" to raise awareness about coronavirus prevention amongst children and youth as it provides facts about the pandemic and how to stay safe and healthy during the outbreak. 30,000 copies of these storybooks have been distributed to school students of Liberia.
 
"Together we will soon also launch more storybooks to address issues like supporting girl education, child marriage, GBV and diabetes and hypertension. Moreover, we will also continue to train more young doctors and provide Liberia with many more first medical specialists," assured Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej.
 
Merck Foundation also announced the Call for applications for their 8 important awards in partnership with The First Lady of Liberia for Media, Musicians, Fashion Designers, Filmmakers, students, and new potential talents in these fields.
