  • ABB robots and RobotStudio®, together with Simpliforge's proprietary software are building South Asia's largest robotic concrete 3D printer
  • Collaboration has already created the world's first 3D printed place of worship and India's first 3D printed bridge
  • Robotics and 3D printing, alongside conventional methods of construction, will help businesses build more efficiently, safely and sustainably

ABB Robotics and Simpliforge Creations, an additive manufacturing solutions company, are collaborating to strengthen and advance 3D Printing technologies for the Indian construction sector. The collaboration will enable construction companies to build structures faster, more sustainably and safely. The technology has the potential to transform the construction landscape across industrial, defense, commercial and residential sectors- especially disaster affected areas set for rapid rehabilitation and infrastructure reinstatement.

"With the focus on infrastructure growth and development in India, it is crucial to invest in technologies that increase productivity and efficiency," said Subrata Karmakar, President - Robotics & Discrete Automation, ABB India. "3D printed construction is already advancing the construction industry, making operations more flexible and efficient, while reducing supply chain costs, construction waste and carbon footprints. We are proud to collaborate with Simpliforge to create state-of-the-art solutions for 3D construction printing."

Investment in infrastructure development, including national highways, government buildings and public facilities is key to boosting India's rapid growth and development. While software has traditionally been involved in the planning and post-build stages, the physical act of construction has remained a manual task. Now, ABB's IRB6700 robots with enhanced payload management can automate this, seamlessly integrating into Simpliforge's operations. This provides an end-to-end solution for the industry alongside conventional methods of construction.

While normal robot systems have the reach of 6.5M diameter, ABB's Robot based system by Simpliforge – the first in India and largest in South Asia - has a higher 3D print size to footprint ratio which can extend to 8.5M. It is easy to operate and can also be transported and commissioned on site. The robot is built to operate in wet and robust construction environments, and can work seamlessly with concrete and cementitious material, making it the best choice for 3D printed construction. This system also ensures unprecedented accuracy, precision and reproducibility - reducing reworking and quality control costs.

"Our long-standing relationship with ABB India ensures we have access to robust, reliable and localized technology that makes our operations faster and more efficient," said Dhruv Gandhi, CEO, Simpliforge. "Using ABB's hardware and software, we developed sophisticated, safer and more reliable 3D printing capabilities that support flexible manufacturing and design freedom in construction. We deployed proprietary software developed with ABB's RobotStudio® to create India's first, and South Asia's largest robotic concrete 3D printer to address the diverse housing needs of the nation. We look forward to working with ABB on many more firsts, following our 3D printed place of worship - a world first, and India's first 3D-printed bridge."

This is the latest example of ABB Robotics bringing greater levels of automation to the construction sector, to make it more efficient, faster, safer and more sustainable. According to a recent Capterra survey, 82% of organisations with a heightened awareness of cyber threats reported increased cybersecurity spending from 2022 to 2023, while a mere 1% reported a recognition of the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures. Companies across various sectors in India have implemented a range of technical and procedural safeguards such as:

1. 61% of surveyed organisations conduct formal cybersecurity risk assessments.

2. Nearly half (48%) of respondents indicated the implementation of network segmentation to isolate specific sections of their IT infrastructure.

3. 46% of surveyed companies apply data classification techniques to safeguard sensitive information.

4. Another critical cybersecurity measure adopted by 46% of organisations is the implementation of zero-trust network policies.

94% say their company uses AI for cybersecurity

94% of cyber-aware respondents in our survey revealed that their companies actively employ AI to fortify their defence mechanisms. Key insights from the survey highlight the profound impact of AI on cybersecurity:

  • 65% of respondents emphasized that AI plays a crucial role in real-time monitoring, swiftly detecting threats as they unfold.
  • 54% reported that AI significantly improves data integration by seamlessly merging threat intelligence feed data with internal network behaviour analysis.
  • Over half (52%) acknowledged the role of AI in automating routine security tasks, including alert triage, incident response, and patch management.

However, the press for AI adoption in cybersecurity does not come without challenges. 48% acknowledged challenges related to the quantity and quality of data affecting the efficacy of AI. 46% recognised the need for additional human expertise to complement AI systems. 37% expressed concerns about attackers manipulating AI systems to evade detection.

Organisations defend against ransomware surge: Two-thirds witness attacks, yet resilience prevails

66% of respondents reported encountering ransomware attacks, showcasing the pervasive nature of this cybersecurity menace. 48% of cyber-aware employees said their company fell victim to at least one ransomware attack in the past 12 months. An alarming 18% faced the challenge of dealing with multiple ransomware attacks during the same period.

In the majority of reported cases, organisations resiliently avoided paying ransoms. However, despite the resilience displayed, the cost of retrieving data post-ransomware attacks remains a significant concern. Among respondents aware of the resolution, 33% faced ransom demands in the Rs. 8,01,000 - Rs. 20,00,000 range, while 16% encountered demands exceeding Rs. 41,01,000. 48% dealt with ransoms below Rs. 8,00,000, while a small percentage (3%) were uncertain about the ransom amount.

Commenting on the survey, Sukanya Awasthi, analyst of the study, said: "The upward trend in cybersecurity investments highlights a response to the growing frequency of data breaches and cyber-attacks. Employees who are well-versed in cybersecurity express apprehension about the diverse threats in the digital realm. Organisations, in turn, employ a spectrum of advanced techniques to fortify their defences against cyber threats. AI plays a crucial role in these defences, yet its optimal functionality hinges on integrating human expertise."

The most eye-catching Chinese New Year celebration in town, the "Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade", is making a grand comeback in Tsim Sha Tsui on the first day of the Year of Dragon (10 February) to heat up Hong Kong's Chinese New Year ambience and kick off a series of Chinese New Year celebrations. The event is organised by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) with Cathay being the title sponsor for the 22nd year. Themed "World Party Great Celebration", the parade showcases the city's pulsating energy with glamourous floats and a big line-up of international and local performances, echoing the energy and motivation of the Dragon. This magnificent celebration with a global touch is a not-to-be-missed party for both the local public and visitors.

Dr Pang Yiu-kai, HKTB Chairman, said, "Every year during Chinese New Year, Hong Kong is filled with intense festivities with a wide range of exciting extravaganzas, attracting visitors to come and feel the blessings of the festival in person. As a signature Chinese New Year celebration in Hong Kong, the Night Parade this year will recreate the classic float carnival with the largest number of international performing groups ever. We have brought together some of the world's hottest performers to the party to spice up the celebration and transform this traditional festival into an international mega event. The HKTB parade will be the first event to kick off a series of Chinese New Year celebratory activities in town. Mr Ronald Lam, Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer, said, "As the home carrier, rooted in Hong Kong for 77 years, Cathay has been committed to developing Hong Kong as an international aviation hub and promoting the city as a vibrant and diverse global metropolis. We are delighted to be the title sponsor of the Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade for the 22nd year. We look forward to these highly anticipated Chinese New Year festivities to attract more visitors to our home city and join the people of Hong Kong in experiencing its colourful and diverse festival culture, celebrating Chinese New Year together."

Majestic floats showcase the eclectic draconic auspiciousness.

This year's "Cathay International Chinese New Year Night Parade" will feature nine floats, and 13 local and 16 international performing groups. Dragons will appear on most of the floats to portray the auspicious dragon hovering over Hong Kong, bringing fortune and joy to the city in the New Year. Together with other popular Chinese New Year elements, such as blooming flowers, felicitous couplets, lucky windmills and firecrackers, the colourfully adorned floats bring to the parade diverse interpretations of the New Year with various themes*. For instance, Cathay will lead the procession with its float, which showcases the convergence of tradition and progress, followed by floats presented by famous attractions, such as Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park Hong Kong, which embody the versatile charisma of Hong Kong. The audience can also spot other good fortune items on the floats, such as galloping horses on the Hong Kong Jockey Club float and spinning windmills that take the form of a dancing dragon on the HKTB float. Operational Performance

Mined metal production for the quarter was 271 kt, up 8% sequentially and 7% y-o-y, driven by higher ore production at Rampura Agucha and Sindesar Khurd mines, further supplemented by improved mined metal grades year on year. 9M FY24 mined metal production stood at 780 kt, up 2% y-o-y on account of improved mined metal grades.

Refined metal production for the quarter was 259 kt, up 7% sequentially and 1% y-o-y in line with the plant availability. Refined metal production for 9M FY24 stood at 760 kt, flat y-o-y.

Integrated zinc production for the quarter was 203 kt, up 10% sequentially and down 4% y-o-y. Refined lead production for the quarter was 56 kt, down 1% sequentially and up 21% y-o-y on account of pyro operations being operated on lead mode for longer duration as compared to base period to maximize silver production. 9M FY24 integrated zinc production stood at 597 kt, marginally down y-o-y, and refined lead production was at 163 kt, up 4% y-o-y.

Saleable silver production for the quarter was 197 MT, up 9% q-o-q and 22% y-o-y in line with the lead metal production and higher accumulation of WIP in Q2 FY24. 9M FY24 saleable silver production stood at 556 MT, up 5% y-o-y in line with lead metal production.

Financial Performance

Revenue from operations during the quarter was INR 7,310 Crore, up 8% q-o-q on account of better zinc & silver volumes, higher zinc prices and favourable exchange rates partly offset by lower lead prices and volumes. The revenue witnessed a decline of 7% y-o-y on account of significantly lower zinc prices, lower zinc volumes and strategic hedging impact in base period partly offset by increased silver & lead volumes and prices and favourable exchange rates.

9M FY24 revenue from operations stood at INR 21,383 Crore, down 16% y-o-y on account of lower zinc prices and volumes and strategic hedging impact in base period partly offset by better silver & lead volumes and prices, and favourable exchange rates.

Zinc cost of production before royalty (COP) for the quarter stood at US$ 1,095 (INR 91,180) per MT, lower by 4% q-o-q (3% lower in INR terms) and 15% y-o-y (14% lower in INR terms). Zinc COP for 9M FY24 was US$ 1,142 (INR 94,448) per MT, down by 10% y-o-y (7% lower in INR terms). Cost improvement is majorly on account of better volume, softened coal prices, operational efficiency partly offset by lower acid realisation, further supported by better grades and better linkage coal availability and utilisation year on year.

EBITDA for the quarter was INR 3,559 Crore, up 14% q-o-q and down 4% y-o-y in line with the revenue from operations and cost improvement, and for 9M FY24 EBITDA was INR 10,040 Crore, down 25% y-o-y, mainly on account of lower revenue being partially offset by cost improvement.

Net profit for the quarter stood at INR 2,028 Crore, up 17% sequentially on account of higher EBITDA partly offset by higher tax expense, and down 6% y-o-y. 9M FY24 net profit was at INR 5,721 Crore, down by 28% y-o-y, primarily on account of lower EBITDA partly offset by lower tax expense.
